Vietnam calls for US understanding in pursuit of balanced economic partnership

VOV.VN - Vietnam has actively worked to strengthen balanced, sustainable economic, trade, and investment ties with the US, seeking its greater understanding as the country is still recovering from the impacts of war and embargo, with a transitioning economy and limited resilience to global shocks.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh made the statement during a working session on May 13 in Hanoi with representatives of US businesses operating in Vietnam to listen to their concerns, revolve bottlenecks, and explore ways to boost bilateral trade and investment cooperation.

This was the second meeting between the Prime Minister and US enterprises in just two months, underscoring the Government’s strong commitment to promoting open dialogue and creating the most favorable conditions for US businesses to thrive and succeed in Vietnam.

The meeting brought together representatives from the U.S. Embassy, the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham), and more than 50 leading US corporations, including Boeing, Molex, Excelerate Energy, Abbott, Coca-Cola, and GE Vernova.

After 30 years of diplomatic ties, 10 years of comprehensive partnership, and two years of upgrading to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, Vietnam–US relations have grown substantially across multiple areas, with economic, trade, and investment cooperation serving as a cornerstone.

Last year’s two-way trade hit US$134.6 billion. The US had over 1,400 investment projects in Vietnam worth approximately US$11.94 billion. Meanwhile, Vietnam ranked sixth among 83 outbound investment destinations for its 252 projects in the US, totaling more than US$1.36 billion.

US businesses praised Vietnam’s investment environment and recent reforms aimed at streamlining administrative procedures, removing unnecessary requirements, and reducing compliance time and costs.

They proposed that Vietnam continue enhancing the business climate by tackling procedural hurdles, cutting non-tariff barriers, clarifying tax and fee structures, and improving infrastructure for power, logistics, and digital services.

US companies also called for greater transparency in origin tracing, timely implementation of signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), and resolution of specific project issues. They reaffirmed their commitment to long-term, sustainable investment in Vietnam.

The urged US businesses to voice support within the US government for policies that promote fair and equitable trade relations based on the principle of shared benefits and risk-sharing.

Concluding the meeting, the Government chief stressed that Vietnam does not want to see trade wars, especially between major economies like the US and China. He called for all nations to cooperate on the basis of international law and the UN Charter, and expressed hope that the ongoing US–China trade negotiations would yield win-win outcomes that also benefit third countries.

Thanking the US for supporting a strong, independent, self-reliant, and prosperous Vietnam, PM Chinh affirmed the country’s policy of putting the past behind, focusing on common ground, narrowing differences, and enhancing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in a pragmatic and effective manner.

Amid global uncertainties, Vietnam sees an opportunity to restructure its economy toward fairness and sustainability by diversifying markets, products, and supply chains. The country remains determined to combat trade fraud and further simplify procedures to ease the burden on investors and businesses.

Vietnam is pushing ahead with strategic breakthroughs in infrastructure, institutions, and human resources, while working to establish international financial centers, advance digital transformation, foster private sector development, and deepen international integration.
The Vietnamese Government is committed to creating a favorable environment and safeguarding the legitimate rights and interests of businesses, including those from the United States.

He emphasized the Government’s role as a facilitator, with businesses at the center, institutions as the engine, and infrastructure as the foundation. Vietnam pledges to protect the legitimate rights and interests of all investors, including those from the United States.

Also at the meeting, PM Chinh said that Vietnam has implemented and will continue to improve its visa policy for foreign nationals, including US citizens. He called on the US Government to consider visa facilitation measures for Vietnamese citizens.
