Vietnam calls for peaceful solution to Ukraine issue

VOV.VN - The nation has made an urgent appeal to the parties involved in the Ukraine conflict to end hostilities, avoid acts which escalate tensions, and resume dialogues to seek comprehensive, satisfactory, and lasting peaceful solutions to differences.

Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, permanent representative of Vietnam to the UN, attended the UN General Assembly’s emergency special session on Ukraine on February 22, one year since the conflict initially broke out.

As part of his remarks, Giang voiced concerns about the situation in Ukraine over the past year, including worrying recent developments and the conflict’s consequences. This includes significant losses to both life and property, the negative impacts on the region and the world, as well as common efforts to promote international co-operation and respond to global challenges.

He therefore underscored the need to abide by international law and the UN Charter, especially the fundamental principles of respecting independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and not using or threatening to use force.

The country urgently appeals to all concerned parties to end hostilities, avoid acts that escalate tensions, and resume dialogue and negotiations to seek a comprehensive, satisfactory, and durable peace. These solutions can serve to put aside differences and show respect for international law and the UN Charter, with the legitimate interests and concerns of all relevant parties being taken into account for the sake of regional and global peace and stability, the diplomat said.

Vietnam believes that the international community should increase safeguarding and efforts to ensure safety for people, thereby ensuring conflict-hit people’s urgent needs are met, whilst protecting and maintaining civilian facilities, especially infrastructure essential for people’s life, he went on to say.

He also highlighted the country’s appeal to the UN, countries, and international organisations and partners which continue augmenting efforts to deliver assistance to conflict-hit people and supporting the UN and the UN Secretary-General’s roles and efforts in seeking solutions.

The nation stands ready to make contributions within its capacity to diplomatic, reconstruction, recovery, and aid provision efforts in Ukraine, according to the Ambassador.

The emergency special session will be held on February 23 (New York time) to continue listening to member states’ opinions and consider a draft UN General Assembly resolution on the principles of the UN Charter on establishing a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in Ukraine.
