Ambassador Hoang Chi Trung made the call while addressing the UNSC urgent meeting on the situation in Chad in New York on May 8.

The ambassador expressed concern about the recent fighting in eastern Chad and urged all the rebel groups in the country to renounce violence and engage in political dialogue with the Government in accordance with the signed agreements.

He called upon all the parties concerned to exercise utmost restraint, respect the international humanitarian laws, and ensure the safety and normal operations of UN staff and humanitarian NGOs and workers.

Ambassador Trung said he is also concerned about the escalating tensions in the Chad-Sudan relations and the military build-up in the border areas.

He called on the Governments of Chad and Sudan to seriously implement the 3 May 2009 Doha Agreement, the Dakar Agreement and other relevant accords with a view to peacefully resolving their differences and normalising their relations.

He also commended the Africa Union, Qatar and Libya for the ongoing mediation efforts and hope that all the parties concerned will respond more positively, thereby defusing the current crisis and stabilizing the situation in the sub-region.

He said Vietnam supports efforts by UN Mission in the Central African Republic and Chad (MINURCAT) to take necessary measures within its mandate to protect civilians, refugees affected by the fighting.

A commitment of the UNSC chairman which was passed at the end of the meeting has stated that any attempt to overthrow a legitimate Goverment by force in Chad is absolutely unacceptable.

Recent fighting between Chad’s governmental soldiers and rebels in Am-Dam in eastern Chad for over the past two days has killed 250 people.
