Vietnam calls for greater efforts to fight poverty in Yemen

VOV.VN - The country has called upon the international community to finalise commitments relating to financial contributions to UN humanitarian activities that can help to combat hunger in Yemen.

This statement was made by Head of the Vietnamese Mission to the UN Dang Dinh Quy when addressing the UN Security Council’s discussion on Yemen, an event that was held virtually on November 11. He also expressed concern regarding the stagnation in the Middle East country over recent months.

Furthermore, there were also calls for all relevant parties to uphold the ceasefire called by the UN Secretary General and his Special Envoy, thereby quickly ending hostilities and resuming negotiations regarding a joint statement for a nationwide ceasefire.

The Vietnamese diplomat went on to urge all parties to strictly implement the Stockholm and Riyadh Agreements, stressing the need for swift action to protect children and prevent a crisis for future generations of Yemen.

During the session, participants called on the international community and sponsors to find a solution that can help locals in Yemen deal with hunger, especially the threat of malnutrition facing children. They also came together to request that all relevant parties work together to deal with the issues related to safer oil storage in ships located off Yemen’s shores.

Reports featured news on the serious situation in Yemen, with local residents facing a high risk of starvation. This can be seen as the malnutrition rate among people in the southern part of Yemen increased by 10% in 2020, whilst it is up by 15% among children under five.

At present, approximately 20 million Yemeni are facing a severe food security crisis. Coupled with this, the economic situation has worsened due to the price of all necessities surging to record highs whilst the value of the local currency has fallen by 25%.

Moreover, it is likely that the second wave of the novel coronavirus pandemic may also have a severe impact on the nation.
