Vietnam, Azerbaijan agree to enhance strategic partnership in energy, trade
VOV.VN - Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan and Azerbaijan leaders have consented to beef up energy and trade cooperation, building on the newly established strategic partnership between the two nations.
Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan met with President Ilham Aliyev and First Vice President Mehriban Aliyeva of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Baku on October 14 afternoon, on the sidelines of the 7th Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA) Summit.
At the meeting, President Aliyev thanked the Vietnamese delegation led by Vice President Xuan for attending CICA 7, viewing the presence as strong support for Azerbaijan’s CICA chairmanship. Highlighting the traditional friendship and similarities between the two nations, he recalled warm sentiments held by generations of Azerbaijani leaders toward Vietnam. The President also shared fond personal memories of his 2014 visit to Vietnam, where he met again with former Vietnamese students and friends.
President Aliyev affirmed that Azerbaijan values relations with Vietnam and welcomed recent bilateral achievements. He noted active energy joint projects between leading enterprises from both sides, as well as growing two-way investment and business exploration. He concurred with Vice President Xuan’s proposals to carry out agreements signed during General Secretary of the Communist Party Central Committee and President To Lam’s state visit to Azerbaijan in 2025, aiming to deepen the Vietnam-Azerbaijan strategic partnership in a practical, effective manner that serves the interests of both peoples.
Vice President Xuan conveyed greetings and best wishes from General Secretary and State President To Lam and senior Vietnamese leaders to President Aliyev and Azerbaijani leaders, congratulating Azerbaijan on its socio-economic achievements and its rising role and stature in the region and the world.
She affirmed that Vietnam always remembers Azerbaijan’s valuable support during past national reunification efforts and present nation-building, highlighting Azerbaijan's assistance in training high-quality human resources for Vietnam's oil and gas industry. She noted that generations of Vietnamese experts and cadres who studied and worked in Azerbaijan have actively contributed to bilateral relations, while acknowledging the positive role of organizations, funds, and people-to-people exchanges in boosting ties between the two countries.
Xuan stressed that Party General Secretary To Lam’s successful 2025 visit to Azerbaijan elevated bilateral relations to a strategic partnership. She proposed that both sides prioritize economic, trade, and investment cooperation while expanding ties in areas where Azerbaijan holds strengths and Vietnam has demand, including oil and gas, energy, transportation, agriculture, tourism, education and training, science and technology, and innovation.
Both sides agreed to maintain delegation exchanges and high-level contacts, intensify exchanges between ministries, agencies, and localities, and maximize the efficiency of bilateral cooperation mechanisms to realize reached agreements and deepen the strategic partnership in a practical and effective manner.
They also consented to facilitate conditions for enterprises to boost bilateral trade, continue seeking joint oil and gas exploration and exploitation opportunities in both Vietnam and Azerbaijan, and consider visa exemptions for ordinary passport holders.
They encouraged opening direct air routes, stepping up people-to-people exchanges, and strengthening cultural, educational, and tourism cooperation to reinforce the social foundation and friendship between both nations.
Furthermore, the two sides agreed to bolster cooperation in areas of mutual strength, such as mining and aluminum metallurgy, while enhancing consultations, coordinating stances, and supporting each other at regional and multilateral forums, thereby promoting multilateralism, upholding the UN Charter and international law, and contributing to peace, stability, cooperation, and development in the region and the world.
