National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong welcomed the visiting President of the Australian Senate Paul Calvert in Hanoi on February 23 and said the visit will help promote mutual understanding and cooperation between the two countries, especially between the two legislative bodies.

Mr Trong expressed his elation at the fine development of bilateral cooperation in economics, trade, investment, education and tourism in recent years, and thanked Australia for prioritising the grant of official development assistance to Vietnam.

The chairman briefed the Australian guest on the operation of the Vietnam National Assembly and said during the past 20 years of implementing the Doi Moi (Renewal) process, the National Assembly has constantly renewed its operation towards democracy and better quality and efficiency. He also briefed his guest on Vietnam’s preparations for the upcoming election to the 12th National Assembly.

Senator Calvert spoke highly of the fine impression during his first visit to Vietnam and expressed his keen interest in the situation in Vietnam as well as its National Assembly’s operation. He said he is happy to see that Australian investment has brought about practical results in Vietnam, contributing to the country’s rapid development in recent years.

Both host and guest shared the view that the two legislative bodies should enhance high-level parliamentary visit exchanges to promote mutual understanding, while coordinating closely at multilateral forums.
