This is the second time Vietnam has assumed this important role, enhancing its status in the international arena.
The Security Council has a major responsibility for maintaining peace and international security. Rotating the presidency gives non-permanent members of the Council a chance to get more involved in making important decisions affecting peace and security throughout the world.
Appointed a non-permanent member of the UNSC for the 2008-2009 term, Vietnam has raised its voice on many important international issues. Vietnam assumed the role of Security Council President for the first time in July 2008.
Taking the role of UNSC President for the second time, Vietnam will have to chair 40 meetings dealing with such issues as the Middle East conflicts, political instability in Honduras, climate change, and nuclear disarmament which will be the subject of the upcoming summit to be held in Copenhagen, Denmark, in December.
Vietnam will preside over the preparation and presentation of a report on UN Security activities during 2008-2009, make preparations for an international conference on the use of nuclear energy, and plan next year’s celebrations of the UN’s 65th founding anniversary and 10 years of implementing the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
During the past two years, Vietnam’s contributions were recognised and praised by many UN member countries. The UN General Secretary Ban Ki Moon said Vietnam’s contributions to the UNSC have helped increase the strength and efficiency of the Council. Most UN member countries agree that Vietnam has done a good job as UNSC President and effectively raised its voice on the international stage.
Vietnam is committed to making measurable contributions to world peace and stability and raising its international profile.
