The fourth conference of the sixth Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Central Committee opened in Ho Chi Minh City on January 29 to review VFF activities in 2006 and draw up its action plans in 2007.

During the three-day conference, delegates will examine reports on the implementation of a circular on “taking a vote of confidence for the post of the communal People’s Council and People’s Committee chairmen and village chiefs” and VFF regulations on overseeing activities of State employees and Party members in residential areas of Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Ninh Binh, Quang Binh and Tien Giang provinces.

In a report delivered by VFF Vice President and General Secretary Huynh Dam, in 2007 VFF chapters and member organisations will step up information dissemination and mobilisation of mass organisations to consolidate the bloc of great national unity, diversify activities and implement policies on great national unity, particularly those on ethnic groups, religious followers, Vietnamese nationals residing abroad, and poor and social policy beneficiaries. They will closely cooperate with State agencies to disseminate information about and implement Resolution 36 of the Party Political Bureau on work related to overseas Vietnamese and continue to promote the national patriotic movement and other campaigns such as “The entire people unite to build a new cultural lifestyle at residential areas” and “Day for the poor”.

Addressing the conference, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung praised VFF for its recent achievements in various areas.

“The Vietnam Fatherland Front has served as a solid bridge between the Party, administration and people,” said Mr Hung.

He briefed delegates on the country’s socio-economic development achievements in 2006 and major solutions for fulfilling tasks in 2007 and the following years.

“The recent admission to the World Trade Organisation is the country’s great economic and political success after 20 years of implementing the Doi Moi (Renewal) process, helping raise Vietnam’s position in the international arena,” said Mr Hung. “WTO membership presents both opportunities and challenges to the country. To overcome difficulties and challenges, we will have to mobilise all internal and external resources for infrastructure construction, economic development, foreign investment attraction and export promotion, while improving people’s living conditions, accelerating education reform and creating high-quality human resources for economic development in the international integration process.”

The Deputy PM also stressed the need for renewal in the entire political system to ensure its consistency and efficiency with the aim of fulfilling national construction and development tasks.
