Luis Alberto Correa Suarez and Enrique Antonio Peraza Munoz had taken part in a scheme to kidnap US CIA commander Smolen in October 1964, during the US war in Vietnam in an attempt to exchange him for the arrested Vietnamese war hero Nguyen Van Troi.
The insignia was presented in Hanoi on April 28 by VUFO President Vu Xuan Hong during a visit by a delegation from the Venezuela-Vietnam Friendship and Solidarity Society from April 24-May 4.
The delegation, led by its President Octavio Beaumont, including the two former Caracas guerrillas, is in the country to study Vietnam’s history and culture as well as its achievements during the renewal process.
Beaumont added that the visit was also an opportunity for a number of Venezuelan electronics, IT and fisheries companies who are accompanying him, to look for business and investment contracts in Vietnam.
VUFO President Hong expressed his thanks to the former Caracas guerrillas for supporting the Vietnamese people during their struggle for national salvation.
The same day, the Venezuelan delegation met with a number of Spanish language students from Hanoi universities to talk about the developments in Venezuela and the friendship between the two countries.
