Magdalena Sepúlveda, the independent expert on the question of human rights and extreme poverty, began a visit to Vietnam on August 23 at the invitation of the Vietnamese government.

She is scheduled to visit poor communes in Hanoi city, Bac Kan province in the north and Quang Nam province in the central region.

She will meet with representatives of the government, ministries and agencies to discuss social policies and aid for the poor.

The expert said such visits offer a chance for countries to review progress in promoting human rights and commit themselves to speeding up this effort.

After the visit, she will make a report and recommendations concerning social welfare in Vietnam, and submit it to the Human Right Council in 2011.
