UN backs Vietnam as NPT Review Conference president
VOV.VN - Ambassador Do Hung Viet, Head of Vietnam’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, held talks with António Guterres in New York on April 23 to discuss Vietnam-UN relations and preparations for the 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).
At the meeting, the UN Secretary-General assessed that the international political and security situation is becoming more complex, posing challenges to disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation mechanisms.
He expressed support for Vietnam and Ambassador Do Hung Viet in his role as President of the 11th NPT Review Conference, scheduled from April 27 to May 22, and expressed confidence that the conference will deliver positive results, contributing to maintaining international peace and security.
António Guterres appreciated Vietnam’s role and contributions to multilateralism and called for stronger cooperation between the United Nations and Vietnam across areas, particularly sustainable development and addressing global issues.
In his capacity as President-designate of the 11th NPT Review Conference, Ambassador Do Hung Viet thanked the UN Secretariat for its coordination and support, underscored the importance of the upcoming conference, and expressed his wish to continue receiving the Secretary-General’s support to help achieve consensus outcomes.
At the meeting, the Vietnamese ambassador also thanked the UN chief for his congratulatory letter to Party General Secretary and State President To Lam and Prime Minister Le Minh Hung following their election by the 16th National Assembly as leaders of the State and Government of Vietnam for the 2026-2031 term.
He said Vietnam greaatly values the cooperation and support of the United Nations in its development and international integration, and called for stronger cooperation across all pillars-peace and security, sustainable development, and the promotion of human rights.
