Turkey, Vietnam bolster comprehensive cooperation and parliamentary ties

VOV.VN - A high-level delegation of the Vietnam National Assembly led by NA Vice Chairman Nguyen Duc Hai made an official visit to Turkey from September 25 to 29.

The visit included talks and meetings with Turkey’s parliamentary and government leaders, working sessions at the Vietnamese Embassy in Ankara, and meetings with the Vietnamese community in Turkey.

At the Turkish Grand National Assembly, Vice Chairman Nguyen Duc Hai held talks with Celal Adan, Deputy Speaker of the Turkish Parliament. He expressed his pleasure at visiting Turkey for the first time, thanked the Turkish Parliament and people for their warm welcome, and congratulated Turkey on its tremendous socio-economic achievements. He affirmed Vietnam’s commitment to strengthening all-around friendship and cooperation with Turkey.

Deputy Speaker Celal Adan welcomed the visit and highlighted the positive development of bilateral relations, especially following Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s official visit to Turkey in November 2023. He affirmed the Turkish Parliament’s readiness to augment cooperation with Vietnam and stressed that the visit would further strengthen bilateral relations.

Both sides consented to consolidate political trust and work towards upgrading Vietnam-Turkey ties to a new partnership, thus creating momentum for cooperation in trade and investment, defence, security, education, culture, tourism, heritage preservation, locality-to-locality cooperation, and people‑to‑people exchanges. Vietnam will serve as a gateway for Turkey to access the ASEAN market, while Turkey will be a bridge for Vietnamese goods to enter markets in the Middle East, Europe, and Africa.

They agreed to intensify inter-parliamentary cooperation, exchanges at all levels, and experience‑sharing in areas of mutual interest such as digital transformation, administrative reform, and law-making process, while enhancing the role of friendship parliamentary groups. They committed to closer coordination at multilateral parliamentary forums, particularly the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA), and the Asia-Europe Parliamentary Partnership (ASEP).

Hai proposed initiating bilateral free trade agreement negotiations, requested that Turkey recognise Vietnam as a full market economy, and consider removing or limiting anti-dumping measures against Vietnamese goods. He also urged facilitating the integration of the Vietnamese community in Turkey.

In response, Deputy Speaker Celal Adan affirmed Turkey would forward these proposals to the relevant agencies for consideration and implementation.

During the visit, Hai held a meeting with Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz, who expressed satisfaction with the substantial progress in Turkey-Vietnam cooperation.

He noted Vietnam is Turkey’s second-largest ASEAN trading partner, welcomed the implementation of e-visas for Vietnamese citizens, and praised Turkish enterprises’ participation in the Long Thanh International Airport project. He emphasized growing defence cooperation, marked by high-level visits and defence agreements between the two countries.

The NA Vice Chairman called for prioritizing cooperation in trade, investment, security, defence, and defence industry, and strengthening local- level cooperation in areas of mutual advantage such as tourism, culture, and heritage preservation. Both sides concurred to increase delegation exchanges, expand diplomatic channels, and effectively carry out existing cooperation mechanisms such as the Joint Economic–Trade Committee and political consultations.

During the talks, Hai conveyed President Vuong Cuong’s invitation to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to visit Vietnam at an appropriate time, and extended invitations to Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz and Deputy Speaker Celal Adan to visit Vietnam.

Earlier, on the evening of September 28, at the Vietnamese Embassy in Ankara, Hai conveyed warm regards from the Party, State, and National Assembly to embassy staff and the Vietnamese community. He praised Ambassador Dang Thi Thu Ha and the embassy staff for their dedication, acknowledged the community’s solidarity and contributions, and urged stronger support for overseas Vietnamese and the establishment of Vietnamese associations in Turkey.

Within the visit framework, the delegation held meetings with key Turkish agencies and enterprises, visited Ataturk Mausoleum and Museum, the Turkish Parliament building, and Ambarli Port, and met with local leaders and the Vietnam-Turkey Friendship Parliamentary Group.
