Top Vietnamese leader visits Lynetteholmen artificial peninsula project in Denmark

VOV.VN - General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee and President To Lam, together with King Frederik X of Denmark, visited the Lynetteholmen artificial peninsula construction project and its large-scale new urban area in Copenhagen on the morning of October 21 (local time), within the framework of his State visit to Denmark.

Lynetteholmen is one of Denmark's largest urban development and climate change adaptation projects, built in the Copenhagen port area facing the Øresund Strait.

The project, approved by the Danish Parliament in 2021 and initiated in 2022, covers an area of approximately 2.75 square kilometers (275 hectares) and is scheduled for full completion by 2070.

The project targets three main objectives: protecting the capital Copenhagen against sea level rise, storms, and flooding; developing a modern green urban area capable of meeting housing needs for nearly 50,000 people and generating around 30,000 jobs; and expanding urban space, developing public transport, green infrastructure, and coastal ecological zones.

Lynetteholmen is considered a symbol of Denmark's long-term vision in combining sustainable urban development with climate change adaptation, offering valuable references for coastal cities in Vietnam.

Visiting the project and listening to useful insights, Party General Secretary and President To Lam respectfully thanked the King, the Royal Family, the Government of Denmark, the city of Copenhagen, and relevant agencies for the respectful welcome extended to the delegation.

The top Vietnamese leader stated that Vietnam has a long coastline, with numerous cities, economic zones, and vital infrastructure systems located in coastal regions and low-lying deltas. Rapid urbanization alongside the increasingly pronounced impacts of climate change necessitates a strong renewal of mindset in planning, urban development, and infrastructure systems toward a green, synchronized, and highly resilient direction.

To create opportunities for expanding development space, particularly seaward, Vietnam has reorganized administrative units at all levels, resulting in 21 out of 34 provinces and cities having coastlines. This is a tremendous advantage for exploiting maritime potential and strengths in the socio-economic development of individual localities and the country as a whole, including the formation and development of coastal urban areas, economic zones, port logistics infrastructure, and other functional zones on land and at sea.

Party General Secretary and President To Lam noted that the experience of Lynetteholmen demonstrates how a climate change adaptation project can be designed to simultaneously create new development space, coastal landscapes, ecological values, and socio-economic benefits. This approach holds significant reference value for Vietnam in researching solutions for coastal urban development and protecting major economic centers against climate risks.

The top Vietnamese leader proposed that relevant agencies discuss and research cooperation opportunities and learn from Denmark's experience, turning today's discussions into specific cooperation programs suited to Vietnam.

With the sound foundation of relations between Vietnam and Denmark, especially shared similarities in green growth and sustainable development orientations, the Party and State leader expressed firm belief that both nations hold huge potential. For bilateral cooperation in urban planning, urban development, infrastructure, and climate change adaptation.
