National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong visited Tien Giang province on April 26 while local people were preparing for the celebration of the 35th anniversary of the Liberation of South Vietnam and National Reunification Day.

He came to Cai Lay district and offered gifts to some heroic mothers and families doing great services for the revolution. The district has 8,000 martyrs, 3,000 wounded and sick soldiers, 400 heroic mothers and 5,000 heroic families actively involved in the past struggle for national independence and freedom.

In 2009, Cai Lay’s total value-added GDP was over 9 percent with the number of poor households dropping to 8.7 percent and people’s living standards improving substantially.

Working with provincial leaders in the afternoon, NA Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong applauded the socio-economic achievements the province has recorded over the years.

He stressed that Tien Giang needs to attach more importance to developing agriculture comprehensively, with a focus on certain plants.

Later, he had talks with a delegation of local NA deputies.
