Thai navy ship begins friendship visit to Ho Chi Minh City

VOV.VN - The Royal Thai Navy vessel HTMS Prachuap Khiri Khan arrived at Nha Rong-Khanh Hoi International Port on May 18, beginning a friendship visit to Ho Chi Minh City from May 18 to 23 to mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Thailand (1976-2026).

The delegation is headed by Rear Admiral Thaveesak Thongnam, Deputy Commander of the First Naval Area Command of the Royal Thai Navy.

Representatives of Vietnam’s Naval Region 2 Command, the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee, the Coast Guard Region 3 Command, the Ministry of National Defence’s Department of Foreign Relations, the Military Security Protection Department and the Ho Chi Minh City Command attended the welcoming ceremony at Nha Rong-Khanh Hoi Port. Thai Ambassador to Vietnam Urawadee Sriphiromya also attended the event.

During the visit, officers and crew members of HTMS Prachuap Khiri Khan are scheduled to offer flowers in tribute to President Ho Chi Minh at the Ho Chi Minh Statue Park, pay courtesy calls on city leaders, Military Region 7 Command and Naval Region 2 Command, and take part in cultural and sports exchanges with officers and soldiers of Vietnam’s Naval Region 2 and city residents. The delegation will also visit historical and cultural sites in Ho Chi Minh City.

On the occasion, the Thai Embassy in Vietnam will organize an exhibition on traditional Thai costumes, Thai cultural performances and a photo exhibition on President Ho Chi Minh at Nha Rong Port to mark the 136th anniversary of his birth (May 19, 1890 - May 19, 2026).

The visit by the Royal Thai Navy ship aims to strengthen mutual trust between the Ministries of National Defence of Vietnam and Thailand in general, and between the Vietnam People’s Navy and the Royal Thai Navy in particular. It is also part of activities celebrating the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Vietnam and Thailand.

HTMS Prachuap Khiri Khan is the second Krabi-class offshore patrol vessel (OPV 552) of the Royal Thai Navy. The vessel is equipped with naval guns and Harpoon anti-ship missiles and is primarily tasked with coastal patrol and protecting sovereignty.

The ship is 90.5 meters long, 13.5 meters wide at its widest point and has a full-load displacement of 1,960 tonnes. It features an angular design and good radar-scattering capability.
