A high-ranking delegation led by speaker of the Thai House of Representatives, Somsak Kiatsuranont, paid an official friendly visit to Vietnam on October 8.

The visit, made at the invitation of Vietnamese National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung, aims to strengthen the traditional friendship and cooperation between the two countries, especially in legislative work.

Somsak Kiatsuranont, born in 1954, holds a Bachelor's degree from Chulalongkorn University. From 1988 - 1990, he worked for the Prime Minister’s Office and was made an advisor for the Minister of Home Affairs in 1992. From 1995 - 1996, he held the position of advisor to the Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives as well as the Trade Minister. From 1996 - 2008 he was Vice Speaker of the House of Representatives. Since 2001 he has been an advisor for the Prime Minister and in 2008 he was elected Minister of Culture and the Minister of Justice.

Somsak Kiatsuranont is currently President of the Thai National Assembly and speaker of Thailand's House of Representatives.

He has been honoured as a Knight Grand Cordon, the highest class of both the Order of the White Elephant and the Order of the Crown of Thailand.
