Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has requested the Red River delta province of Thai Binh to set concrete targets in order to mobilise every resource for economic development in the five coming years.

The province needs to take advantage of its abundant workforce, promote scientific and technological application in industrial and agricultural production, thus making a great leap, PM Dung told provincial key officials while inspecting the socio-economic performance and rural development in Thai Binh on May 10. It also needs to continue administrative reform to attract more investment, particularly in hi-tech and environment projects, the PM added.

He praised Thai Binh province’s achievements in all fields, such as average growth of over 12 percent for the 2006-2010 period. The province has fulfilled its socio-economic targets, maintained political security and social order and improved the people’s life. However, Thai Binh is still an agriculture-based province with low economic competitiveness and ineffective economic restructuring, the PM pointed out.

He asked the province to assess and overcome difficulties to achieve the 2010 GDP target of 14 percent. The PM also gave comments on the province’s proposals relating to the exploration and exploitation of the Red River deep coal reserve, projects on road and bridge linking Thai Binh and Ha Nam provinces, coastal highway, sand embankment in Diem Dien port, and the construction of a 1,000-bed hospital.

Earlier, PM Dung and his entourage visited Thanh Tan commune, a new rural model in Thai Binh province’s Kien Xuong district.
