Strong confidence in the young city

Da Nang is striving to fully tap into its potential and confirm its important role in the central region and the country as a whole.

Thirty-five years ago, on March 29, 1975, people in Da Nang were celebrating their liberation day in many places, from Phuoc Tuong battlefield to Nuoc Man, Son Tra peninsular, Da Nang airport and Thanh Binh beach. Since liberation day, Da Nang has developed strongly from being a war-worn city into a prosperous modern one.

Now a centrally-run city, Da Nang has made many great changes thanks to the Party and State’s forward policies and the city’s good strategic planning, particularly for urban development.

Nguyen Ngoc Quyen, from Thach Thang ward in Da Nang’s Hai Chau district, said that the city’s recent achievements were attributed to the great efforts made by the municipal authorities and the local population.

Breakthrough in urban development

Standing on Thuan Phuoc bridge that spans the Han River – the longest bridge in Vietnam – visitors are impressed with Da Nang’s new facelift. They can have a panorama of the Da Phuoc international urban area and the huge road network connecting Nguyen Tat Thanh street to the Son Tra peninsular and Hai Van mountain pass.

Many domestic and foreign investors expressed their satisfaction at the recent implementation of many projects in Da Nang and the city’s comprehensive infrastructure and sustainable urban development plans. For the past two years, the city has led the country in the provincial competitiveness index (PCI).

Kim Young Cheon, a representative from the Korean-invested company, Kreves Ltd., said that his company had decided to invest in Da Nang thanks to the city’s open investment policy. Like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang is attracting large inflows of foreign investment.

Vitality of a young city

Da Nang is a heroic city with a powerful revolutionary tradition. Upholding their forefathers’ undaunted spirit, younger generations are sparing no effort to contribute to the city’s development through its “red carpet treatment” policies.

In 2009 alone, nearly 120,000 young intellectuals chose Da Nang as the best destination to begin their career. The city also sends its young officials abroad for further training. The deputy head of the Da Nang municipal Party Committee’s Office, Phan Van Tam, who is also chairman of a club for the city’s young officials, said that his club’s members are initiating ideas to develop a modern city. “We are encouraged to contribute ideas to the city’s development plans. Any members who make positive contributions will be introduced to the municipal authorities for further studies and possible promotion,” he stated.

As a young city, Da Nang offers many incentive policies to lure in more investment capital. Last year, the city’s GDP growth rate reached 11.2 percent, showing that the city continued to develop despite numerous difficulties and challenges caused by the regional and global financial crisis.

Currently, Da Nang’s leaders are paying a lot of attention to ensuring social welfare and are implementing socio-economic programmes in line with the real situation in different areas across the city. By the end of this year, Da Nang expects to have built almost 7,000 houses for low-income earners and social policy beneficiaries.

Moving towards higher objectives

Vo Duy Khuong, deputy chairman of the Da Nang city People’s Committee
Da Nang plans to invite a group of leading US engineers to design a zoning plan for the city until 2025 following the Prime Minister’s decision to turn Da Nang into a centrally-run first-tier city, which will also be an important hub for the central and central highland regions.

By 2025 Da Nang is expected to have a total population of 1.5 million. Vo Duy Khuong, deputy chairman of the Da Nang city People’s Committee, confirmed that Da Nang is also striving to become an environmentally-friendly city, a city of technology and tourism and a major venue for cultural and sporting events.

The second Da Nang international fireworks contest, which finished on March 28, was an excellent opportunity for Da Nang to promote its image to international friends.
