The world is facing a number of challenges, requiring countries to work closely with each other to deal with them.

State President Nguyen Minh Triet and 192 other leaders attended the 65th annual United Nations General Assembly summit in New York, the US on September 23.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called on all countries to strengthen solidarity to achieve the set goals to ensure a brighter future for every nation in the world.

He emphasised on the need for countries to maintain viewpoints and basic principles to prevent wedges being driven between nations and speed up commitments to deal with urgent issues, such as eliminating poverty, preventing climate change, abolishing nuclear weapons and improving the status of women.

Mr Ban said that only the UN has ability to deal with current global issues. He said that the UN is the one international institution that cannot be replaced. It is high time for countries to stand side by side to progress and expand their achievements. Humankind is looking forward to real progress and only the UN is able to fulfill this.

He said the world is facing a number of challenges, such as food and financial crises and political polarisation and the international community hopes that the UN will deal with them.

He praised the outcomes of the Millennium Development Goals summit, particularly the goal to eliminate poverty and the spread of epidemics by 2015. He pointed out the most important issues that the international community has to resolve, including gender inequality and racial discrimination.

Brazilian Foreign Minister, Celso Amorin, Swiss President, Doris Leuthard and US President Barrack Obama delivered speeches to affirm an important role of UN in dealing with current global challenges and to require reforming the UN.
