Strategic partnership with Vietnam in Brazilian media spotlight

VOV.VN - Brazil’s Novaresistencia news outlet published on July 5 an article emphasizing strategic connectivity between Vietnam and Brazil as a foundation for future global cooperation, coinciding with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s official visit to Brazil for the 2025 expanded BRICS Summit.

The article remarked that Vietnam–Brazil relations are gaining strong momentum, standing out as a vivid example of South–South cooperation in today’s multipolar and competitive world. Despite being half a world apart, the two countries have developed deep ties grounded in shared history, culture, and aspirations for development.

Vietnam and Brazil established diplomatic relations on May 8, 1989. Though located in different hemispheres, the two nations are closely linked by significant commonalities: a history of struggle for independence, rich cultural identities, and the warm hospitality of their peoples. These shared values have served as a bridge, turning traditional friendship into strategic progress.

With their upgrade to a Strategic Partnership in 2024, Vietnam and Brazil are entering a new phase of comprehensive cooperation. Vietnam, a rising star in Asia, is increasingly recognized for its economic potential and strategic importance.

According to Novaresistencia, bilateral trade between Vietnam and Brazil grew from US$1.5 billion in 2011 to over US$7.7 billion in 2024, an increase of more than fivefold over the past decade. This surge shows the strategic complementarity between the two economies, particularly as Vietnam strengthens its role in global supply chains.

Vietnamese exports such as seafood, textiles, footwear, rubber, steel, and processed industrial goods not only meet Brazilian market demand but also help diversify the country’s import sources. Vietnam is one of the world’s leading seafood exporters, with products like shrimp and pangasius that meet international standards and are widely welcomed in Brazil.

On the other hand, Brazil, with its abundant natural resources and position as an agricultural powerhouse, has supplied Vietnam with strategic commodities such as soybeans, corn, wheat, cotton, minerals, and animal feed ingredients. These meet the demands of Vietnam’s agricultural and processing sectors and contribute to building a sustainable value chain that benefits both markets.

Vietnam’s economic potential, however, extends far beyond traditional exports. With a modern economic development strategy, the country is rapidly emerging as a hub for high-tech industries, the digital economy, clean energy, and biotechnology. It is also one of the world’s top producers of smartphones and electronic components, while hosting major manufacturers such as Samsung, Apple, and Intel.

With the ambitious goal of raising bilateral trade to US$10 billion by 2025 and US$15 billion by 2030, Vietnam and Brazil are laying the groundwork for a new stage of comprehensive economic cooperation. Vietnam, with its rapid growth, strategic location, and extensive FTA network, is positioned to act as a crucial bridge linking Brazil with the rest of Asia.

The article concluded that the Vietnam-Brazil Strategic Partnership represents a model of solidarity and shared ambition among developing nations. Built on political trust, driven by economic and trade cooperation, and strengthened through cultural diplomacy, the partnership has delivered real benefits for the people of both countries and contributed to global peace and stability.
