A new spring has arrived in Vietnam. On the Lunar New Year’s Eve, State President Nguyen Minh Triet, on behalf of the Party and State leaders, sent his best wishes to all Vietnamese people and foreign friends.

"The moment marking the start of the Dinh Hoi (the Year of the Pig) has arrived," said State President Nguyen Minh Triet. "I would like to extend my best New Year greetings to the entire population, comrades and soldiers in all parts of Vietnam and overseas Vietnamese. May the New Year bring peace and prosperity to our country.

"On behalf of all the Vietnamese people, I would like to extend my best wishes for friendship, peace, cooperation and success to the people of the world, and expatriates living and working in Vietnam.

“During the past year, despite numerous difficulties and challenges including natural disasters, epidemics and global complications, under the leadership of the Party, the entire people and army made all-out efforts to reap great success in political, socio-economic and diplomatic areas, creating favourable pre-requisites for national development in the coming years.

“We are very happy to see the positive changes of the country and each family, from urban to rural, far-flung, border and island areas. The entry into the World Trade Organisation and the successful organisation of the 14th APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting helped elevate the country’s position and strength and people are confident of the goal of a rich people, a strong country and an equitable, democratic and civilised society.

President Triet said the entire people and army enter the New Year with more zest and do so on the back of the great achievements in 2006, the 77th anniversary of the Communist Party of Vietnam and the upcoming election to the National Assembly. He called on all compatriots and soldiers and overseas Vietnamese to uphold the tradition of great national unity, grasp opportunities and overcome challenges, resolutely curb corruption, bureaucracy and wastefulness, practise thrift, and promote patriotic emulation movements for greater achievements, to successfully realise resolutions of the 10th National Party Congress.

“Let’s celebrate the New Year with new spirit and hope for further success," said Mr Triet.
