State President Nguyen Minh Triet, accompanied by HCM City authorities, visited the construction site of the East-West Highway and tunnel running through the Saigon river on February 24.
The Thu Thiem tunnel is the first modern project ever seen in Vietnam.
The HCM City East-West Highway Project Management Board said since construction work started in September 2009, Japanese and Vietnamese engineers and workers have been trying to complete the Thu Thiem tunnel project on schedule to connect to the 1,490 metre six-lane highway.
The trial run is slated for July and the tunnel will be open to traffic in the third quarter of this year.
