On the morning of September 26 in New York, State President Triet visited members of Vietnam’s permanent delegation, representatives from the overseas Vietnamese community and American friends.
Mr Triet briefed them on the positive results of his delegation at the UN Security Summit on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament and the general debate at the 64th session of the UN General Assembly.
He praised them for their thorough preparations and positive contributions to Vietnam’s success at the UN session for the sake of peace, stability and development in the international community.
The State leader also appreciated the overseas Vietnamese community’s contributions to their home country’s development and the promotion of friendship between Vietnam and the US.
On he occasion, Mr Triet also met with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and former US President Bill Clinton.
At the meeting with Ban Ki-moon, Mr Triet highlighted the UN’s prestige and role in keeping peace and combating poverty and thanked the UN leader for his attention to promoting cooperation with Vietnam.
Vietnam supports the UN Secretary General’s five-point initiative on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament and continues to cooperate with the UN in implementing the One UN initiative as well as dealing with other global issues.
The State leader invited Mr Ban Ki-moon to visit Vietnam and his invitation was accepted with pleasure.
Mr Ban Ki-moon praised Vietnam as a shining example in implementing the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and its contributions to the UN Security Council. He congratulated the country on holding the second presidency in the UN Security Council in October and wished Vietnam the best of luck in fulfilling its tasks.
At the meeting with former US President Bill Clinton, Mr Triet informed him about socio-economic development in Vietnam and the country’s measures to cope with the global economic downturn. He thanked Mr Clinton for his efforts in promoting bilateral relations, preventing HIV/AIDS and deactivating bombs and land lines in Vietnam.
The US Government and people are interested in developing good relations with Vietnam and wish great success in national development, said Mr Clinton.
