Vietnam Television (VTV) should draw up a long-term development strategy to become an influential broadcaster in the region and the world, says State President Nguyen Minh Triet.

While visiting VTV on January 21, Mr Triet told its leaders and staff that the national television station must strive to keep pace with the rapid development of information technology to be one of the country’s leading media agencies in international integration.

International integration must be carried out selectively to maintain Vietnam’s traditional cultural identity under Party guidelines and State policies, said Mr Triet.

He praised VTV for launching new channels, increasing programme quality and expanding its coverage over the years to provide audiences with up-to-date information about what is happening in Vietnam and the world, as well as diverse entertainment services.

He encouraged the station to discover and replicate exemplary role models, combat negative influences and help foil subversive schemes by hostile forces to become an official media agency of the State and a reliable friend of every Vietnamese.

He extended lunar New Year Greetings to all VTV leaders and staff and expressed his hope that the station will continue to increase operational efficiency to fulfil tasks entrusted to it by the Party and State.

Currently, VTV is running the News and Current Affairs Channel (VTV1), the Science and Education Channel (VTV2), the Sports, Entertainment and Economic News Channel (VTV3), the Overseas Vietnamese Service (VTV4), the Ethnic Languages Channel (VTV5), the Youth Channel (VTV6), and the South-targeted Channel (VTV9).

It is planning to launch a channel for the foreign expatriate community in Vietnam  (VTV8).
