President Triet left Hanoi on September 18 for New York to attend the United Nations high-level plenary meeting on the Millennium Development Goals (MDG Summit) held at UN Headquarters in New York from September 20-22.
Accompanying Mr Triet are Deputy Foreign Minister, Pham Binh Minh who is the Vietnamese ambassador to the UN and the head of Vietnam’s permanent mission to the UN; Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment, Cao Viet Sinh; and vice chairman of the Presidential Office, Giang Son.
The summit, which will mark the 65th UN anniversary will review the progress and challenges after 10 years of implementing the Millennium Development Goals to draw lessons and devise a general plan to fulfill the goals set for 2015.
Mr Triet led the senior Vietnamese delegation to the summit representing Vietnam’s successful implementation of the MDGs. Vietnam has fulfilled five of the eight goals ahead of schedule and aims to achieve all eight goals by 2015. The Vietnamese delegation will share experiences with other countries and discuss orientations for 2015, and affirm that Vietnam will be an active, constructive and responsible member of the UN and continue contributing to developing the international community.
*** At the invitation of the US President Barrack Obama, President Triet as ASEAN president and President Obama will co-chair the second meeting between ASEAN and US leaders in New York on September 24.
