State President Nguyen Minh Triet: The development of economic and trade ties between Vietnam and Yunnan province is in keeping with the two countries’ aspirations, contributing to raising trade turnover between Vietnam and China to US$15 billion by 2010.

Addressing the business forum for Vietnamese and Yunnan-based companies in China’s southern province on May 16, Mr Triet affirmed that the Vietnamese Party and State always treasure and highly appreciate the results of cooperation with Chinese business circles, especially with those from Yunnan province. The Government of Vietnam will create a favourable investment environment for them in the spirit of mutual benefit, contributing to deepening the relations of friendship, good neighbourliness and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries.

President Triet also urged Vietnamese businesses to cash in on incentives given to products of Vietnamese origin that are imported through the border gates in China’s Yunnan province.

He also called for stronger cooperation in the areas of electricity, mining, tourism and education as well as the deployment of the “Two corridors, one economic belt” programme which is set to include Singapore and countries from the Greater Mekong Sub-region.

“Businesses from Vietnam and Yunnan province need to boost trade with a special focus on value added products while continuing our cross-border trade under stricter management in order to curb smuggling,” Mr Triet said.

Speaking at the conference, Yunnan Chairman Qin Guang Rong said that initiatives such as the establishment of an economic corridor that links Yunnan’s capital Kunming to Vietnam’s Lao Cai province, Hanoi capital and the northern port city of Hai Phong needed to be accelerated.

The Yunnan chief expressed hope that the scheme would help to facilitate traffic flows, promote trade, balance electricity demand and supply, and smooth out border gate customs procedures.

He concluded by saying that the project will give fresh impetus to the development of a free trade area between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Two-way trade between Vietnam and Yunnan hit the US$500 million mark in 2006.
