Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa arrived in Hanoi on October 22 for an official three-day visit to Vietnam at the invitation of State President Nguyen Minh Triet.

This is the first visit to Vietnam by a Sri Lankan President since the two countries established diplomatic ties in 1970.

During his stay, President Rajapaksa is scheduled to hold talks with President Triet and meet with Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh and Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.

Talks and meetings will focus on measures to increase bilateral cooperation in economics, trade, investment, agriculture, seafood and oil and gas.

Vietnam and Sri Lanka have signed 8 cooperation agreements on culture, trade, postal services, aviation, economics, science and technology, visa exemptions for diplomatic and official passport holders, tourism and double tax avoidance.
