Singaporean media gives positive assessment on President Yacob’s Vietnam visit

VOV.VN - Singaporean media outlets have widely covered the State visit to Vietnam of Singapore President Halimah Yacob which is running from October 16 to October 20, with plenty of positive assessments.

Channelnewsasia reported that President Yacob and State President Nguyen Xuan Phuc reaffirmed their long-standing and positive friendship to boost the strong and wide-ranging economic co-operation between Singapore and Vietnam.

The two sides agreed to bolster ties in areas such as digitalisation, cybersecurity, and green economy, including renewable energy and carbon credits, sustainable infrastructure, as well as vocational training.

Elsewhere, the Straits Times reported that during a meeting with President Phuc, President Yacob emphasised the importance of mutual relations, with the two countries moving towards their 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties by 2023.

President Yacob affirmed that both sides are like-minded and trusting partners.

The two countries are fully committed to reinforcing the solidarity of ASEAN, promoting an open and rules-based order, as well as deepening regional economic integration.

In line with this, both sides have worked closely on issues such as public health and sustainable development through the bloc.

President Yacob and President Phuc witnessed the exchange and signing of four Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs), two of which relate to energy co-operation and carbon credits, a MoU on the exchange of information on cyber security, cyber-attacks, and cybercrime, and a MoU on co-operation in technical and vocational education and training.

President Yacob said she hopes that when global travel is fully resumed, the two countries will continue to increase exchanges in education, tourism, and culture, adding that Singapore's educational institutions would like to learn more about Vietnam through exchange programmes and study tours.

The Singaporean President said that sustainable development is a promising key area of co-operation between the two countries, requiring their respective governments and businesses to promote the will and resources of the two sides.

President Yacob added that ties in renewable energy, sustainable infrastructure, carbon credits, and green finance will enable both countries to achieve their goals in the green energy transition.

With Singapore setting a net-zero emissions target by the mid-century and Vietnam announcing a similar target by 2050, the signing of the MoU on carbon credit co-operation aims to develop a bilateral and legal binding framework for the transfer of carbon credits and the identification of potential carbon credit projects.

Moreover, Singapore's Second Minister of Trade and Industry Tan See Leng assessed that the MoU on energy co-operation would pave the way for greater cross-border electricity trade, whilst boosting development and financing of low-carbon technologies. In addition, the MoU on carbon credit cooperation highlights the two countries' shared commitment to jointly implementing pilot carbon credit projects in line with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement on climate change.

The two leaders also witnessed the awarding ceremony of investment license for Singapore's Sembcorp joint venture to develop the 12th Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Park (VSIP) located in Can Tho.
