More than 60 scholars from ASEAN countries and China, Taipei-China, the US, the Republic of Korea, the UK, Germany, Canada, Australia, Russia, France, Japan, India, Belgium, and Sweden are attending the second international seminar on the East Sea opening in Ho Chi Minh City on November 11.

Addressing the seminar, entitled “East Sea: Cooperation for regional security and development”, Dr. Duong Van Quang, President of the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, stressed that there has been great developments in the situation in the East Sea.

Despite conflicts over sovereignty and territorial disputes over the East Sea, great efforts have been made by concerned parties to promote information sharing, open dialogues, and negotiation to work out a legal framework in order to settle disputes and maintain a stable and peaceful environment, Quang said.

The two-day event, jointly held by the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam and the Vietnam Lawyers Association, focuses on major issues including the importance of the East Sea in the context of changing strategies in concerned countries, the adverse impact of the situation on the regional security and prosperity, and international legal issues regarding the dispute in the East Sea.

Participants are also discussing ways to build mutual trust and regional marine cooperation.

The seminar is taking place while regional security issues are being discussed at ASEAN regional meetings and those between ASEAN and its partners. The dialogues have helped concerned parties be more aware of the benefits of peace, reduce suspicion, and promote mutual understanding and trust.
