The Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations (VUSTA) plays a key role in grouping and uniting Vietnamese intellectuals to boost the application of science and technology, said Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.

PM Dung made the statement during a meeting with VUSTA’s leaders in Hanoi on April 15, aimed at seeking measures to renew and increase the quality of the Union’s activities during the current process of national industrialization and modernization.

The Government leader stressed that science and technology is one of the most important factors in helping the nation obtain rapid and sustainable development. The Party and State always attach importance to increasing the role of Vietnamese experts. Therefore, VUSTA should perform its duties more effectively to increase competitiveness, improve the quality of management and boosting the application of science and technology in national construction and defence, Mr Dung added.

He also affirmed that the Government will work more closely with VUSTA, especially in policy-making and management work.

PM Dung agreed with building the cooperation mechanism between the Government and VUSTA to receive more recommendations from Vietnamese intellectuals on legislative work and government-level projects.

Participants in the meeting focused their discussions on completing VUSTA’s structure, financial mechanism, infrastructure development, and intensive policies for intellectuals. They also emphasized the need to encourage the participation of Vietnamese elites in making science and technology become a driving force behind socio-economic development.

Since its establishment in 1983, VUSTA now has 125 member associations across the country, comprising more than 80,000 scientific and technological experts.
