The Pravda article reviewed General Giap’s revolutionary career during the country’s resistance wars against the French and Americans, highlighted by the Dien Bien Phu campaign of 1954, and noted that General Giap’s book ‘Dien Bien Phu Victory’ has been translated into many languages, including Russian.
Pravda recalled the moment when President Ho Chi Minh proclaimed independence for the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV) (now the Socialist Republic of Vietnam) on September 2 in Hanoi’s Ba Dinh Square.
General Giap was appointed Minister of Home Affairs In the DRV cabinet when he was only 35 years old. One year later, he became head of the Ministry of Defense.
Pravda quoted the late Prime Minister Pham Van Dong’s words calling General Giap the main architecture of the country’s military victories and praising his great contributions to national construction when he was a member of the Politburo and Deputy Prime Minister.
It also noted General Giap’s contribution to the success of Vietnamese hero Nguyen Tuan’s flight into orbit in collaboration with the space programme of the former Soviet Union.
Since his retirement at the age of 80, General Giap has continued to contribute to the development of the Vietnamese Army and promote friendly relations with countries around the world.
