The procuracy sector should deliberately settle pending complaints and petitions and focus on the fight against corruption to win people’s trust in 2007.

The task was entrusted to the sector by National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong at a conference in Hanoi on January 17 to review activities of the Supreme People’s Procuracy in 2006 and draw up a plan of action for 2007.

“Every local agency must set a bright example in the fight against negative phenomena, including corruption, to become a healthy unit. To do this, procuracy staff must constantly train and improve their political stance, professional skills and virtues and keep themselves updated with international laws to meet the country’s requirements for international integration.” said Mr Trong.

He said the procuracy sector should better perform its supervisory power and judicial inspection activities to minimise cases of false investigation and prosecution. In case of unfair trial, he said the sector should acknowledge mistakes, compensate falsely-accused persons in line with the law and strictly deal with involved individuals and organisations.

The procuracy sector reported that it detected and prosecuted 424 corruption cases in 2006, or 84 cases more than 2005. It requested relevant agencies to re-investigate 31 cases and annulled 108 decisions to bring to court corruption cases as the number of cases related to property appropriation and power abuse increased sharply.

In 2007 the sector will continue to focus on combating corruption and keeping a close watch on the settlement of civil and administrative cases as well as law enforcement activities.
