A royal ceremony to welcome Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet was held in Phnom Penh on August 27 by King Norodom Sihamoni.

King Sihamoni said he was happy to receive President Triet in Phnom Penh and affirmed that Vietnam is a big and traditional friend of Cambodia.

Mr Triet reiterated Vietnam’s consistent policy of attaching great importance to developing relations with neighbouring countries, including Cambodia.

He expressed pleasure at the drastic changes and significant achievements made by the Cambodian people during national construction and development under the reign of the King and the leadership of the Royal Government.

Both host and guest shared the view that the two nations have preserved and developed the friendly and neighbourly relationship, and their cooperation has expanded to many other areas.

They showed their determination to further strengthen the long-lasting friendship, fine neighbourliness and long-term and comprehensive cooperation, considering this relationship an invaluable asset of the two nations.

Also in the morning, Mr Triet laid wreaths at the Independence Monument and a Monument commemorating volunteer Vietnamese soldiers in Cambodia. He also attended a ceremony to inaugurate Radio the Voice of Vietnam (VOV) Bureau in the capital.

President Triet arrived in Phnom Penh on August 26 for an official visit to Cambodia at the invitation of King Sihamoni.
