This is one of the six rounds of talks at the UN Summit on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
The heads of many countries underscored the need to see sustainable development as a vital question for every country in the world. Sustainable development ensures MDGs will be carried out effectively and on schedule. In that spirit, the delegates agreed to get on with their UN commitments.
As well as agreeing with the international community on climate change, including issues on water resources, President Triet called on all countries and international organisations to draw up strategies for the proper and effective use of water resources. The Mekong River runs through Vietnam so the country will work with other regional countries to exploit and use water resources more efficiently.
Regarding sustainable development at national level, Mr Triet said that economic development not only stabilises the marco economy and ensures a high economic growth rate as well as economic security but also improves the quality of growth and the success of investments. Economic development needs to be combined with social equality, poverty reduction and energy and natural resource saving to cope with natural disasters and climate change.
It is essential to deal with issues relating to food and energy security, economic recovery and development assistance to reduce the impact of the global financial crisis on developing countries and to conclude international rounds of talks on trade and climate change, emphasised Mr Triet.
He said he hopes that every country will cooperate and fulfill their commitments for the benefit of every nation.
