State President Truong Tan Sang arrived in Seoul on November 8, beginning an official visit to the Republic of Korea (RoK) at the invitation of President Lee Myung Bak.

He was welcomed by the first Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the RoK, the Vietnamese Ambassador to the RoK, and representatives of the Vietnamese community in the country.

This is the first visit to Seoul by President Sang and also the first by a Vietnamese head of State in the past decade. It reiterates Vietnam’s consistent policy of strengthening the strategic partnership with the RoK.

Presidents Sang and Lee will exchange measures to promote bilateral cooperation, especially in economics, trade, investment, labour, science-technology, culture and education, with a view to meeting the US$20 billion trade value target by 2015.

They will also discuss the organisation of activities to mark the 20th anniversary of Vietnam-RoK diplomatic ties in 2012.

After the RoK, President Sang will fly to Hawaii on November 10 to attend the 19th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit.
