President holds phone talks with US counterpart

Vietnam treasures the friendship and cooperation with the US and will actively work with the country to create new and practical progresses for the bilateral relations in the future.

President Tran Dai Quang made the statement while talking on the phone with US President Donald Trump on February 14.

The talks took place in the context that the relationship between the two countries continues to develop substantively and effectively on the basis of respect for each other’s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and political institutions, as well as for the benefits of the two countries’ people and for peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world.


President Donald Trump extended his greetings to the Vietnamese leaders and people on the occasion of the traditional Lunar New Year. He expressed his impressions on the achievements the Vietnamese people have made over the past year.

He also thanked the Vietnamese leaders and people for their warm welcome for him and the high-ranking US delegation during his State visit to Vietnam and participation in the 25th APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in November last year. 

He affirmed that the US attaches great importance to its relations with Vietnam and the country’s active role in the region and will continue cooperating with Vietnam in promoting the bilateral Comprehensive Partnership in the coming time.

President Tran Dai Quang congratulated the US Government and people on their achievements made during the first year of office of President Donald Trump, asserting that the US President’s State visit to Vietnam and his attendance in the 25th APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting marked a significant milestone, creating a strong driving force for the effective and stable development of the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Partnership.

He emphasised that Vietnam treasures the friendship and cooperation with the US and will actively work with the country to create new and practical progresses for the bilateral relations in the future.

President Tran Dai Quang and President Donald Trump exchanged views on concrete measures to strengthen the Vietnam-US relationship, focusing on implementing the agreements reached by the two countries’ high-ranking leaders. 

They agreed to continue prioritising the promotion of economic and trade relations, considering them a focus of and driving force for bilateral ties. 

The two leaders also consented to boost other bilateral cooperation areas such as addressing was consequences, including the implementation of a dioxin remediation project in Bien Hoa airport.

Regarding the regional and international situation, the Presidents reaffirmed both sides’ positions on the East Sea issue and agreed to maintain high-level exchanges, contacts and meetings to promote bilateral relations for the benefits of the two countries’ people, thus contributing to consolidating peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world.
