PM works with Vietnam Bar Federation
The Vietnam Bar Federation (VBA) needs to perform well its role as a common house for lawyers to make their contributions to building a law-governed socialist State, said Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.
Working with the VBA on May 24, PM Dung called on its members to effectively implement all assigned tasks to protect justice, national sovereignty and citizens’ legitimate rights and interests.
VBA Chairman Le Thuc Anh said that after three years of operation, the Federation has set up 62 provincial and municipal bar delegations with more than 7,160 lawyers. The country now has 56 organizations along with 200 foreign lawyers practising law here.
Over the past three years, the Federation has contributed to enhancing judiciary reform, building a law-governed socialist State, making and imparting laws, and cooperating with the Government to check administrative procedures.
In 2010 and 2011, the Federation helped handle more than 67,000 cases related to criminal proceedings, economics, administration and labour, and provided legal services for relevant individuals and organizations.
However, Anh pointed out weaknesses and limitations in the coordination between the Federation and bar delegations to improve professional skills, and the dissemination of information about VBA’s activities to the public.
In his speech, PM Dung asked the Federation to improve operational efficiency, reject distorted allegations about the country’s situation and boost cooperation with international bar associations to help them better understand and support Vietnam’s proper stance on sovereignty and territorial integrity, and progress in exercising human rights.
The Federation should properly deal with denunciations and complaints, especially those related to 528 prolonged and complex lawsuits, make proposals on administrative reform and enhance legal aid for people, Mr Dung said.
PM Dung and other leaders from relevant ministries and sectors gave opinions on ways to resolve the VBA’s proposals to facilitate its operations and observe October 10 as its annual Traditional Day.
