The Vietnamese Government will strive its best to promote Vietnamese-British cooperation, with priority given to economic-commercial and educational and training areas, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung told a British Prime Minister envoy.

PM Dung made the remark while receiving Charles Powell, Special Envoy of the British Prime Minister, in Hanoi on March 7, who was on a working visit to Vietnam.
He agreed on the establishment of a joint trade committee between the two countries.
PM Dung expressed his pleasure at the fine development of the two countries' relations in all areas, particularly in economy, commerce and investment. Two-way trade value reached US$1.6 billion in 2006, up 14-15 percent over the previous year and many major British investors have been successfully operating in Vietnam, he said.

The PM thanked the British people and government for their ODA for Vietnam, which is worth US$450 million in the 2006-2010 fiscal period.

PM Dung expressed hope that the British government will support Vietnamese students who study in Britain and encourage British universities to open branches in Vietnam.

Charles Powell said that the education and training ministries of the two countries have signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation and the British government is keen to cooperate with Vietnam in this field.

Powell said, a joint trade committee is needed to facilitate bilateral trade activities.
He conveyed a letter from Prime Minister Tony Blair to PM Dung to invite him to visit Britain.
