Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has inspected local efforts to prevent floods and reduce disaster risks in Long An, Dong Thap, and An Giang, which were hard hit by the recent floods.

On October 12, after his on-site inspections, he met and worked with leaders of the three southern provinces in Hong Ngu town.

Addressing the meeting, the government leader said Vietnam has significantly reduced the number of the dead and missing in the recent floods in comparison with the floods of 2009 in the Mekong Delta. He highly appreciated the provincial authorities’ efforts to help local people cope with floods and co-exist with them.

Mr Dung agreed with local proposals for more funding from the central government to reinforce key irrigational systems and buy rice seeds.

The recent floods claimed a total of 34 lives, submerged nearly 60,000 houses, and damaged nearly 958km of dykes.
