Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung praised great contributions by the culture and information sector to the country's socio-economic achievements in 2006, especially in making culture become the foundation of society.

At his working session with the Ministry of Culture and Information in Hanoi on March 5, the PM praised the media for exposing many corruption cases and scandals to help create an atmosphere of democracy and transparency.

The media has also worked well in encouraging examples of good deeds in all fields, the Government leader noted.

For the 2006-2010 period, the PM asked the Ministry of Culture and Information to employ measures to ensure the cohesion of economic development, Party building and cultural promotion to steer the country towards developing in a comprehensive and sustainable manner.

He also requested that the ministry join hands with relevant agencies to build a civilised lifestyle in society.

The cultural branch, in particular, must concentrate in perfecting its institutions to provide a legal corridor for art performances and media operation, the PM underlined.

He ordered the information and culture sector to speed up its administrative reform.
PM Dung also gave the green light to the Ministry of Culture and Information to purchase a house in France to establish a Vietnamese cultural centre.

He also agreed with the ministry's plans to restore several cultural works, and build Vietnamese culture-tourism villages, national historical museum, exhibition centres, film studios and theatres.
