The Prime Minister has agreed to a steering committee being form to help him direct and coordinate anti-money laundering measures across the country.

The committee, headed by Standing Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung, will include the Governor of the State Bank of Vietnam, as well as leaders of the Ministry of Public Security and other concerned ministries and agencies.

The committee will be tasked to assist the Prime Minister in formulating strategies and solutions regarding to prevent and combat money laundering.

It will also help the PM to enforce country’s obligations to the Asia-Pacific Group on Money Laundering (APG) and implement anti-money laundering recommendations proposed by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).

The committee will also liaise with key anti-terrorism forces and work on proposals to adopt measures to prevent terrorism Vietnam.

Early this month, a large number of local policemen, judges, customs officers, border guards and officials were updated with the necessary knowledge and skills to discover and combat money laundering crime.

This was part of a workshop jointly organised by the Ministry of Public Security and the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in northern Lao Cai province, to strengthen the capacity of law enforcement agencies to prevent and combat money laundering.
