PM Chinh urges EC to soon review and lift IUU yellow card

VOV.VN - Continuing his working trip to attend the 47th ASEAN Summit and related meetings in Malaysia, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met with President of the European Council Antonio Costa on the morning of October 27 to discuss bilateral cooperation and issues of shared concern.

Expressing his pleasure at meeting President Costa again following their exchange at the UN Ocean Conference in June, the Vietnamese Government leader reaffirmed that the European Union remains one of Vietnam’s leading partners.

Highlighting the most urgent issue in bilateral relations, PM Chinh reiterated Vietnam’s strong political determination and resolute efforts to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. He urged the European Commission (EC) to send an inspection mission to Vietnam soon for evaluation, thus paving the way for the early removal of the “yellow card” warning.

Chinh said he personally chairs weekly meetings with relevant ministries and localities to address the issue, while promoting cooperation with other countries, including ASEAN members, to develop a sustainable fisheries sector. He noted that Vietnam is enhancing fishermen’s and enterprises’ capacity to adapt to responsible fishing practices and supporting their transition from offshore fishing to sustainable aquaculture.

Regarding future Vietnam-EU cooperation, Prime Minister Chinh proposed that the two sides intensify high-level exchanges, agree on a roadmap for upgrading bilateral ties, and strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, science, technology and innovation as key pillars of partnership.

He called for full utilization of opportunities under the EU–Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), closer coordination to deal with business difficulties, and urged the EU to encourage remaining member states to ratify the EU–Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA). He also invited European businesses to invest in Vietnam’s priority projects in infrastructure, renewable energy and green transition.

Recognizing the EU’s important role in global affairs, the Vietnamese Government chief affirmed Vietnam’s support for the EU’s Global Gateway Initiative, reiterating the country’s commitment to fostering ASEAN–EU relations. He said Vietnam will continue serving as a bridge connecting the EU with Southeast Asia.

For his part, President Costa agreed to advance the priorities raised by PM Chinh, affirming that the EU values Vietnam’s role and achievements, particularly its dynamic economic growth. He expressed satisfaction that both sides are working toward elevating relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership and underscored the EU’s desire to deepen cooperation with Vietnam, especially in trade and investment, green and digital transition, response to global challenges, and reinforcement of an international rules-based order.

Discussing regional and global developments, President Costa agreed on the need to bolster multilateral cooperation, while emphasizing the EU’s priority of deepening ties with ASEAN and regional partners. In a time of global uncertainty, he praised Vietnam’s constructive approach to peace and security issues and its consistent stance on the fundamental principles of international law.

On this occasion, PM Chinh invited President Costa and other EU leaders to visit Vietnam at a mutually convenient time. President Costa accepted the invitation and said he would arrange the visit soon.
