Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has urged Kien Giang province to effectively implement the Party Central Committee’s Resolution 26 on agriculture, farmers and rural areas.

During his two-day working visit to southern provinces, Mr Trong worked with Kien Giang's provincial leaders on August 28.

Kien Giang has promoted its potential and created many cooperatives and economic groups which are operating effectively, which has contributed to the province's socio-economic development.

More than 80 percent of the natural areas in the province are agricultural land and more than 70 percent of the population is farmers, so Kien Giang has identified the important role played by agriculture, farmers and rural areas. After Resolution 26 was issued, the province disseminated relevant information widely among officials, Party members and the people, urging them to implement it effectively.

The province has developed concentrated production areas, including those for the cultivation of high quality rice, fruit and aquaculture.

Mr Trong said Kien Giang should develop its processing industries in line with the consumption of goods; reduce exports of raw products and increase exports of processed goods; and focus on its best products, such as rice, fruit, and seafood. It should also help farmers preserve and consume local products, expand trade promotion, and build more commercial centres.

In addition to economic development, the province should also pay attention to social welfare policies, especially those for the poor and policy beneficiaries.

Mr Truong suggested some measures to implement Resolution 26 more effectively including better planning and land management, generating local jobs, and developing the collective economy based on a new cooperative economic model. He urged the province to fully exploit its maritime advantages to help maintain national sovereignty and border security.

While in Kien Giang, Mr Trong and his entourage took a fact-finding tour of Thach Dong village in Tan Hiep district to visit some outstanding farmers and learn more about the implementation of Resolution 26 there.
