On July 8, Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh left Hanoi for an official visit to Russia at the invitation Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

The visit comes at a time when the two countries are celebrating their the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties. Vietnam and Russia (former Soviet Union) have a long- established ever since the Vietnamese people waged the wars of resistance against foreign invaders to defend national dependence and unify the country.

The event will help further promote high-level political dialogue between both countries and reaffirm Vietnam’s external policy of independence, self-reliance, multilateralisation and diversification of international relations with top priority given to developing the country’s time-honoured relationship and comprehensive strategic partnership with Russia.

Party leader Manh, the Russian President and other Russian leaders will review the last ten years of Vietnam-Russia strategic partnership. They will discuss how to carry out previously signed agreements aimed at developing bilateral ties to a higher level and Vietnam’s international status in the Asia Pacific region and  the world as a whole.

The visit also aims to strengthen the traditional friendship between the Communist Party of Vietnam and the Communist Party of Russia.
