Parliamentary speaker meeting ends successfully

The meeting of parliamentary speakers from the G20 countries ended successfully on September 4 with agreements on ensuring food security and other common issues.

The meeting laid a foundation for the G20 countries and other countries to promote cooperation to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on food security and poverty reduction.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Chairman of the Vietnamese National Assembly (NA) Nguyen Phu Trong met with parliamentary leaders from China, Russia, and Japan.

At a meeting with the Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of China’s National People's Congress, both sides expressed their happiness at the development of multifaceted bilateral cooperation, especially when the two countries are celebrating the 60th anniversary of their diplomatic ties.

The Chinese official highly praised Mr. Trong’s participation in the meeting of the parliamentary speakers, saying that Vietnam’s position in the world has been raised. He said he believes that Vietnam will successfully host the 31st General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) in Hanoi.

When working with Alexander Torshin, the Deputy Chairman of the Russian Federation Council, Mr. Trong affirmed that Vietnam always attaches great importance to cooperation with Russia and hopes to become Russia’s strategic partner.

Chairman Trong hoped Vietnam and Russia will organise more activities to strengthen the traditional relationship and communication among the young generations in both countries to mark the 60th anniversary of their diplomatic ties.

Vietnam is looking forward to President Medvedev’s official visit as well as the Russian Federation Council’s participation in the upcoming 31st AIPA General Assembly, said Mr. Trong.

Russia is willing to share experiences with Vietnam for mutual benefit, said Mr. Torshin, adding that he was very impressed by Vietnam’s achievements in producing and distributing food. He also expressed his belief that Vietnam will gain further achievements in its renewal process.

At the working session with the vice chairman of Japan’s House of Councilors, Otsuji Hidehisa, NA chairman Trong thanked Japan for its support for Vietnam at the meeting as well as for their ODA capital. He highly praised the implementation of strategic partnership agreements between Vietnam and Japan for a prosperous Asia and considered it a milestone in the development of both countries.
