Panama will support Vietnam's candidacy for non-permanent membership in the UN Security Council for the 2008-09 term, affirmed Panamanian senior officials while meeting with Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Le Van Bang during his recent visit to Panama.

Mr Bang, who is also Special Envoy of the Prime Minister, was received by Chairman of Panama's National Assembly, Elias Castillo, and First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Samuel Lewis Navarro. He also held with Deputy Foreign Minister Ricardo Duran and met with leaders of economic, trade and service ministries.

Vietnam deserves to be a non-permanent member of the council as it will actively contribute to keeping international peace and security, the hosts said.

As a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Panama is willing to share experience and cooperate closely with Vietnam.

Panama always attaches importance to its multifaceted cooperation with Vietnam and is willing to create favourable conditions for Vietnam to export goods to Latin America, they said, showing their appreciation of Vietnam's achievements during its 20 years of renewal.

The PM's Special Envoy expressed thanks to the Panama government and people for their support to Vietnam, especially during the integration process. He also affirmed Vietnam's support for Panama's admission to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in the near future.
