The Overseas Vietnamese Assistance Fund under the Foreign Ministry’s Committee for Overseas Vietnamese (COV) held a meeting on January 6 to review activities in the past year and set tasks and orientations for this year in the presence of State Vice President Truong My Hoa.

In 2006, the Fund carried out 16 projects worth nearly VND3 billion with a focus on launching cultural activities, and teaching the Vietnamese language for the overseas Vietnamese communities in Laos, Cambodia, the Czech Republic and the US and helping them boost investment cooperation in economics, science and technology in Vietnam. The fund also encouraged organisations and individuals inside and outside the country to contribute more than VND1 billion.

The State Vice President highly praised the fund’s role in mobilising overseas Vietnamese to make contributions to the country and asked relevant ministries, particularly the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Culture and Information and the Ministry of Education and Training, to take practical actions in order to raise the fund’s operation efficiency.

The Overseas Vietnamese Assistance Fund serves as a bridge between the nation and the overseas Vietnamese communities which now amount to more than 2 million in total.
