The Navy’s High Command held a ceremony in Vinh city on May 27 to present 21 pieces of coral from the Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago to the central province of Nghe An, the birthplace of the late President Ho Chi Minh, as a sign of Vietnam’s sovereignty over the islands.

This was described as a symbol of great socio-political significance by the Deputy Political Commissar of the Navy, who confirmed that the Truong Sa and Hoang Sa Archipelagoes hold a strategic position in the country’s defence and security and boast abundant natural resources of great economic value to the nation.

He said the Navy was extremely proud to give Nghe An province the 21 pieces of coral which symbolize the 21 islands from the Truong Sa Archipelago, a sacred part of the nation’s territory.

Nghe An province has decided to put the coral on display at its museum to raise public awareness of the need to ensure the sovereignty of the country’s seas and islands.
