Immediately after taking office on July 25, newly elected State President Truong Tan Sang talked to the media, emphasizing that safeguarding sovereignty and territorial integrity is an issue of prime importance.

For any country, big or small, national sovereignty is sacred and inviolable and this is the common view shared by every Vietnamese. The protection of national sovereignty must be based on international laws, especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea to settle territorial disputes.

This is the result of a long process of struggle, especially by small countries to affirm their sovereignty. Every nation has an independent status. They devise their own solutions to protect their sovereignty and Vietnam also does the same, Mr Sang said.

Regarding anti-corruption in the near future, President Sang stressed that combating corruption is always an issue of great concern for voters and people across the country.

The Party has adopted a resolution on corruption prevention and control while a law relating to the issue has also been promulgated. The important thing is to take action, he noted.

Mr Sang also responded to questions about the amendments to the 1992 Constitution and incentive policies for social policy beneficiaries.
