Our current task is to protect national independence and freedom and pay tribute to those who have rendered great service to the nation, said President Nguyen Minh Triet.

Mr Triet made the statement at a conference in Nghe An province on July 16 to honour individuals who have made outstanding contributions to Vietnam’s revolution and have faithfully followed President Ho Chi Minh’s moral example.

He said the nation is grateful for the enormous contributions and sacrifices of martyrs, war invalids, heroic Vietnamese mothers, and veterans who helped restore independence and freedom to Vietnam.

In the 35 years since the war ended, Vietnam has recorded remarkable renovation achievements despite numerous obstacles. In very difficult circumstances, Mr Triet said, war invalids and veterans have succeeded in stabilizing their lives and making a contribution to national construction and defence.

President Triet urged Vietnam’s youth to uphold their predecessors’ traditions and continue to study President Ho’s moral example.

The State leader also affirmed that the Party and State always pay due attention to social policy beneficiaries and pledged to create the best possible conditions for them to enjoy better lives.
